The illustrated Life and Health publication dated May, 1919, and published by the Review and Herald Publishing Assoc. was a very important work that gave the gift of information to a troubled world. This was the time during the Spanish influenza outbreak. We want to share with you the public domain digital reproduction of the publication because we are entering a time of uncertainty once again. In sharing this publication and the other items on this blog entry, we do not intend to cause any concern, but are only sharing the information. In our opinion, it is not necessary to become alarmed over the outbreak of swine flu or any other possible pandemic, and it is not necessary to be afraid. God is prepared for such conditions and has answers for his people. He hopes that his people will also share the information with others that they might know of his love for them.

This is a very fun recipe. At the time, in 1919, eggs weren't the problem that they are today, i.e., sick chickens, etc... . The eggs can be replaced with an egg substitute such as the packaged Ener-G egg substitute, tapioca starch or other egg substitutes. The boiled egg can be replaced by diced or mashed tofu.

This recipe is published in the Life and Health publication and can be downloaded above.

Here is a very meaty-tasting

NUT LOAF

3-4 cup nut meats, chopped
2 large potatotes, boiled with skins, then peeled and mashed
1 hard-boiled egg, chopped
1 medium-sized onion, chopped
1-2 pice celery, chopped
1 tablespoon oil
3-4 cup cracker crumbs
1-2 teaspoon sage
Salt to taste
1 egg beaten or the white alone

Mix all together. Form into a loaf, put into pan, pour one cup water and two tablespoons oil into the pan. Roast one half-hour Or the mixture can be packed into an oiled bread tin and baked.

Serve with

BROWN SAUCE

1 small onion, chopped
3 tablespoons cooking oil
1 -4 cup flour
1 pint boiling water
1 teaspoon salt

Cook the flour in the oil till it is a medium dark-brown color. Add the chopped onion and cook til the onion is browned. Then stir in the boiling water. Boil one minute. Strain, and add salt. The flour muyst be stirred almost constantly while browning to prevent scorching.
